DIT Students in Malawi 2009!!
by user on April 4th, 2009

I’m travelling back over to Malawi on the 5th of April for two weeks with 15 fellow college students as you might have guessed the internet connections over there are pretty minimal so by bloging will be slowing down to say the least you may be able to keep up to date with myself and my groups movement on the charities photo blog which can be found here http://wellsforzoe.org . This year we are going over to work in an orphan day care centre with over 450 orphans attending, we also hope to construct two buildings for the planned agricultural college, and we will also be helping with the maintenance and construction of wells. All these projects are aiming to allow the people of Malawi to become self sufficient.

Last year a different group, I and the residents of Luvuvu managed to build a three class room school in two weeks. During this time our collective labour and donations helped build what many in Northern Malawi are calling the miracle school due to the speed of construction. This school built by us, the parents, and even the pupils is now being used by 270 pupils daily. The total cost of the school was only €2700. This show’s how so little can make such a big difference.

Wells for Zoë is a small Irish humanitarian organisation. At the beginning they were involved in wells and pumps for safe drinking water, rainwater harvesting, and small dams for water storage, in four rural areas of Malawi. This has now been expanded to projects such as the orphan day care centre, and educational buildings. Set up in 2005 by John and Mary Coyne, Wells for Zoë concentrates on low cost, small scale, appropriate and sustainable water technology and projects. This charity is dedicated to providing clean water for the people of Africa with no administration costs allowing 100% of your sponsorship to reach the people of Malawi. John and Mary have specifically targeted a region with an extremely high HIV rate, very poor amenities and little fresh clean water however this is changing. With new technologically advanced pumps that John and Mary have sourced out we believe we can provide clean water for a child in Malawi for life for just €1. There is more information available about this brilliant charity at www.wellsforzoe.org and our group is mentioned on the sites blog.
