Some Tips for the Exams

by user on April 30th, 2009

Make a study timetable and stick to it.

Include some fun time in your timetable and stick to it too!

Try and eat well. The library can be a haven for colds and flu so don’t let a cold ruin all your study.

Although it is easier said than done, don’t get stressed.

If someone is talking in the library, tell them to be quiet. If they don’t stop get a library steward.

Make sure to keep quiet in the library – conversations are for outside!

Aim to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night.

If you don’t understand something, contact your lecturer. They want you to pass; otherwise they’re in during the summer correcting your exams.

Bring plenty of pens and water to the exams. If you must bring sweets, make sure they are quiet to open!

Don’t forget to bring your ID to the exam. Replacement College IDs are available from the Admissions Office upstairs in Áras Ui Chathaill at a cost of €13.

Remember you can go and chat to the Welfare or Education Officers in the Students’ Union if you’re feeling stressed about exams and essays, or you can email them at su.welfare@nuigalway.ie or su.education@nuigalway.ie

Find a Study Area in NUIG

by user on April 23rd, 2009

As anyone attending NUIG will know at this stage, it’s almost impossible to find a place in the library if you get in after 9…

Here’s some random places you can almost always find a desk…

The IT building (this normally fills up by 11).

The Cairnes Building (on floor -1)

The Tower Block (go to the end of the concourse and take the stairs beside the Cairnes theatre, there loads of rooms on the 1st floor)

The Arts Millenium building (on the ground floor at the back)

The worst part is actually doing the study after finding a place!

That time of year!!

Here it is again…. It’s the end of semester 2 and it’s getting close to exam time…. Here’s some tips on getting through exams alive….!

1. Have all necessary material with you

You can’t borrow items such as pens, pencils, rulers or special equipment while in an examination.

2. Have a relaxing night before your exams

Have an early night, and try to have a healthy breakfast.

3. Read the entire paper.

Where you have choices, decide which ones you plan to answer.

4. Plan your time.

Spend some time drafting a plan for the questions you choose to answer.

5. Jot down ideas as they come to you.

While you are answering one question, information about another may suddenly occur to you. Jot it down somewhere because when you come to that question perhaps an hour later, you may have forgotten it.

6. Don’t leave any questions unanswered.

If you are short of time, use note form. Remember, you can only be marked on the answers you give.

7. Never leave the room early.

If you have time at the end, go over your work, add information (eg in the margin). You can’t return if you suddenly remember a fact after you have left.

8. Do not spend too long on multiple choice questions.

With multiple choice questions it is best to cover the answers and work out your own before looking at the choices on paper. If you can’t answer the question come back to it later - have a guess.

9. Never omit an entire question.

No matter how well you answer other questions, you must leave time for all questions - a perfect answer can still only earn a certain number of marks. If you write nothing, you can’t receive any marks and you have lost all your marks for a particular question. Write something - it may at least give you a few points.

10. Maintain a stable energy level.

Eating foods such as chocolate bars before an exam might give you an energy boost to begin with but your blood sugar levels will drop within an hour and your energy will plunge dramatically, making it hard for you to concentrate.
